beet test 04. space flight

beet test! i like how this one came together... it kind of unintentionally traces the evolution of stylized sound fx, bouncing back n forth between rootsier tracks, older breaks, and some soundtrack stuff. shouts out to sixto rodriguez, the gold sparkle trio, hudson mohawke & mike slott. theres a nice samon kawamura beat in there too. enjoy...

mountains. choral

this is a mix of the new one from mountains, one of my favs out of brooklyn. mountains does folksy electroacoustic drones, weaving together synthetic and handmade sounds with field recordings in waves of luminous, shifting patterns. they really tie the room together. choral is their third proper recording, both their previous releases & really anything off the apestaartje label is worth scooping up.

thank you jay dee

James Dewitt Yancey (February 7, 1974 – February 10, 2006)

it's dilla month this month. or perhaps black history embodied and expressed in sound-month. dilla's music is above and beyond. the work of a genius who, like mozart, was born at the perfect juncture of time and space to express his gifts; detroit, michigan, the rising wave of underground hip-hop. plenty of records to listen to.

this one jumps around a lot, from early slum village-era beats, to delicious vinyl joints, beat tape selections, some donuts, some stuff from the shining, electric circus, and some interview pieces. it's maximalist, and sort of skewed towards the esoteric/instrumental/spiritual side of things, but all n all i think its a good picture of the scope of dilla's work. please turn it up.

DIMLITE

For the past four or five years Dimlite has been making some really great experimental beats-oriented music..... i don't know much about him except that hes from Switzerland and he just completed work on an album with Scott Herren (Prefuse 73, with whom he shares some obvious aesthetic sensibilities).... he also has a new record coming out this spring which sounds amazing.....

Here is a short mix of beats from Dimlite.... an intro from his Misel Quitno side project, couple of tracks each from his last two records, and some cool interludes which i like..... dude obviously had access to some records growing up.

You can also grab a mix of outtakes from his last album here.... kind of a wild 10 minute mashup of stuff with an awesome end-piece anyone who makes art should probably hear.....

peace!

madlib. dil cosby suite

madlib's tribute to j dilla comes out on CD next month....

taking jay dee's late beat tapes, and probably his record collection, as a jumping off point, madlib's created a kind of endlessly morphing soul-sound collage. i find it really visual in a way. rhythmically, these two volumes of the beat conducter series represent a kind of roots form of the heartbeat pulse-swing behind all of dilla's music.

check the string sample of the roots' "act too/love of my life" joint from things fall apart. probably nabbed from carlos nino and miguel atwood ferguson's orchestral translations of dillas work, also set to drop next month.

here is a mix of a few of my fav beats on the record.... and a flying lotus beat thrown on the end, enjoy!
